Friday Catch-Up: End-of-June Updates

This week was full of different news from Facebook, Google, YouTube, and other major players, who influence online advertisers. To keep up, we selected most interesting updates and highlighted important details. Enjoy your read!

Google Search Monopoly Abuse

Have you heard about a new record fine faced by Google? Incredible $2.7 billion.

As the New York Times reports, European antitrust officials are about to hit the company with a penalty larger than €1 billion. They opened three investigations. First, the European Commission claimed that Google favored its own comparison shopping site while diverting traffic from the competitors. Second, the officials checked whether Android software interfered in online competition. Third, Google was suspected in restricting consumer choice by its advertising policies. It is hard to predict the consequences for advertisers, but as for now, everything is being proceeded as usual.

Anti-Terror Pact by the Social Media Quartet

Microsoft, Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter came together to form a working group to fight extremist content. The group intends to develop and share technical solutions to remove extremist content from ad placements and prevent its appearance online. The companies operate under the newly created Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism. One of the missions the quarter shares is to teach small businesses and organizations how to combat terror.

Our experts already use scripts that allow excluding unwanted placements (see this example).

YouTube Announces VR180 Format

YouTube cooperated with Google’s Daydream team to work on a new 180 video format. The company introduced this format as a high-resolution video that focuses on “what’s in front of you”, as opposed to 360 video that is too much for most users. Another great thing is that the creators designed the format in the way that it supports livestreaming. For now, any cameras are supported, but the Daydream team is working on a camera designed for VR180  from the ground up.

To gain an understanding of how the things work, put on your VR headset and check out this video.

Obviously, this update is interesting to advertisers, who will be able to present their products in a new form and, therefore, attract more customers.

New Group Features from Facebook

We hope that you have not missed the updates from Facebook. They hosted the first Facebook Communities Summit in Chicago and announced new features designed to empower group admins to develop online communities:

  • • Group Insights will provide more information, such as “real-time metrics around growth, engagement, and membership.”
  • • Group filtering will help admins work with membership requests.
  • • Removed member clean-up will be possible to complete in one step.
  • • The company begins testing group-to-group linking, which allows group admins to recommend groups to their members.

Another thing that we can’t wait to share with you is that Facebook reached 2 billion monthly users. It took less than five years to grow from one to two billion.
