Friday Catch-Up: How Businesses Can Use Google Trends

Welcome fall and goodbye summer! Today, we’d like to write our traditional Friday blog post skipping a back-to-school topic (you’ve probably read a lot about it recently). Let’s discuss the tool that will help you stay in trend and increase the effectiveness of your advertising campaigns, both online and offline. So, here it is.

Google Trends is a tool helpful for ecommerce site owners, as well as for marketers, SEO specialists, and bloggers. Do you want to find new products to sell? Or search for new topic ideas for your personal blog? Maybe, you need to know your target audience better? The list of questions that Google Trends can potentially answer is very long. We composed the following hints to help you benefit from the options available.

Identify audience’s interest to particular queries over time

For example, you can research a specific term and identify audience’s interest to it over time and also add a comparison. In the following example, we tested how popular a term ‘electronic commerce’ has been over the last 5 years:

We found out that 1) ‘ecommerce’ is a far more popular term as compared to ‘electronic commerce’ and 2) in the second part of December, interest for both these term drops. Such insights can be used by both SEO and PPC specialists so that they could create and promote more relevant advertising content.

Determine interest by region

Yes, you may find out that some countries use different vocabulary. And you should use it too when your target audience is there.

In our example, people in Tanzania, Zimbabwe, and Uganda more often search for ‘electronic commerce’ which is different from the worldwide trend. So, if you promote digital marketing services there, you’d better use an ‘electronic commerce’ keyword to reach a wider audience.

Get inspired by related queries

Users also search for other queries while they are looking for a keyword that you pay close attention to. Google Trends allows you to identify the most popular queries and those with the biggest increase in search frequency. Compare these results for ‘ecommerce’:

Having such information will help you understand the needs of your potentials and address them with a precise message.

Learn featured insights

Some topics are popular in search in a particular country within a certain period of time. You can easily pick a trending topic and use the opportunity to reveal it in your publications. Thus, you typically drive more attention to your content.

Understand what happens in a particular area

When you have an idea of what is going on, you can better address the needs of people there.

In fine

Studying trends is fun and the obtained results may surprise you. Nevertheless, Google Trends is a useful digital marketing tool, which helps you research keywords, pick content ideas, formulate headlines, plan your content calendar for a blog and social media, and more.
