The client was previously known as Apple Parts, a brand with which we have been collaborating for quite some time.
In early 2024, the company faced a legal challenge with the domain appleparts.io. Since the domain included the word "Apple", the Apple Inc. team could have issued a legal action. Additionally, the brand name made it impossible to sell products in full compliance with U.S. regulations.
In response, the client initiated the first domain migration on April 2, 2024, moving to macnest.com.
Read the case study about the first domain change.
However, the issues didn’t end there — Apple’s legal team also flagged this new name. It turned out that even using “mac” in the domain was considered a potential trademark violation.
In November 2024, the client had to undergo a second domain migration within just a few months.
The Promodo SEO team was tasked with ensuring a smooth transition to the new domain while minimizing losses in search visibility and organic traffic.
To ensure a smooth and controlled domain migration from macnest.com (Domain 2) to techtoro.io (Domain 3), the Promodo SEO team followed a detailed, multiphase checklist.
Here are some main steps that we followed during the domain change for our client.
Based on our considerable experience with migration, we’ve created several SEO recommendations on how to manage several domain changes.
If you have already redirected Domain 1 to Domain 2 and now to Domain 3, avoid confusing search engines with a formal change-of-address tool from Domain 1 to Domain 3. Stick to technical 301 redirects instead.
When using the Indexing API, group pages by similar content (e.g., category pages, product pages) to streamline reindexing and ensure consistent visibility gains.
Focus on high-search-volume, low-competition categories. Having these pages optimized before the migration gives them a better chance of maintaining visibility.
Before shutting down Domain 2, remove redundant or broken pages, fix crawl errors, and ensure the site structure is clean. This improves crawl signals and redirect reliability.
Be aware of domain history when planning migrations. Domain 2 had a legacy, while Domain 3 was new — this played a role in how Google treated the site post-migration.
Despite two domain migrations within a single year, the website showed strong resilience in organic performance.
Considering the seasonal drop in demand for MacBook spare parts during the holiday season and three Google updates in November – December 2024, the recovery speed was above expectations.
