Challenge

The company used to have the brand name Macnest. Since the domain contained the branded word “mac,” Apple Inc. could have initiated legal action. Moreover, using this name made it difficult to sell products in full compliance with U.S. law. The federal trademark law (Lanham Act) prohibits using another company’s trademark in advertising, as it may mislead consumers about the product’s origin or its connection to the trademark owner. That’s why, in November 2024, the client had to undergo a domain migration.

The Promodo SEO team was tasked with ensuring a smooth transition to the new domain while minimizing losses in search visibility and organic traffic.

Solution

Migrating from one domain to another is a complex and risky process that can cause significant drops in search rankings and traffic — ultimately affecting the profitability of the organic channel.

To ensure a smooth migration, the Promodo team developed a detailed, step-by-step plan.

Key steps during the move to the new domain:

Acquiring a new domain

The first step was purchasing the new domain — techtoro.io. While the second domain had its own history and backlink profile, the third one was selected from scratch.

  • Clean history. No risk that the domain was previously used for questionable content (adult, gambling, spam). This eliminates potential penalties from Google.
  • No toxic backlinks. Old domains often carry a “baggage” of low-quality links. With a new domain, we could build the backlink profile from the ground up — and do it the right way.

We’ve previously explored how keywords in a domain name can influence rankings, so it was crucial to choose one that aligned with the website’s niche. At the same time, we took U.S. legal requirements into account — specifically, avoiding words associated with Apple’s trademark.

Website Copying

To prepare for the migration, we created a copy of the existing website, which served as an intermediate test version. This allowed us to update the content and adjust settings without any rush. The copy was closed from indexing and protected with a login and password to prevent both users and search bots from accessing it.

At the same time, we installed an SSL certificate to ensure a secure connection for users and build a reliable technical foundation for the upcoming migration.

An SSL certificate is a digital certificate that verifies a website’s authenticity and encrypts data transmitted between the user and the server. It enables the site to run on the HTTPS protocol, ensuring a secure connection, greater user trust, and an additional SEO advantage.

It was crucial to ensure that after the migration, the “weight” of the pages (PageRank or internal link equity) was distributed correctly without unnecessary redirects. That’s why, on the test version, we updated all internal links to ensure proper authority transfer between pages.

Website Migration

After completing all preparatory stages, we, together with the developers, launched the new website on the new domain. First, we removed the blocking so that users and search engines could access it immediately.

Next, we verified the correct operation of the site, including:

  • accessibility for crawling and indexing (tags and robots.txt file);
  • presence and correct functioning of the SSL certificate;
  • proper setup of canonical and hreflang tags, and other metadata;
  • detection of broken links and redirected URLs;
  • identification of outdated or irrelevant links, etc.

This thorough check helped avoid unnecessary technical issues in the first days after migration.

Redirect Setup

This step was crucial — it officially confirmed the site’s transfer to the new domain. Together with the developers, we implemented one-to-one 301 redirects from the old domain. This helped preserve traffic, pass link equity, and maintain search rankings.

We recommend performing a crawl of the old domain after setting up redirects to ensure no page was left without redirection. Only then can the old domain be safely deactivated without risking a drop in visibility or traffic.

Monitoring

After launching the new domain, it was essential to focus on ongoing monitoring and gradual recovery of performance metrics. We measured and compared the rankings of pages on Domain 1 and Domain 2 every 3–4 days to track progress. This approach allowed us to quickly identify ranking drops, analyze their causes, and take timely corrective actions.

In addition to tracking rankings, we closely monitored traffic, the number of indexed pages, and the proper functioning of redirects. This helped us observe how Google gradually “accepted” the new domain and evaluate the speed of visibility recovery.

A successful domain migration consists of many small but crucial steps — each one influencing the final result. That’s why we compiled a detailed checklist that guided our work on this case, and we’re sharing it with you below.

Results

Despite the domain migration, the website showed strong resilience in organic performance.

  • October 2024 (pre-migration): 46.3K clicks
  • November 2024 (month of migration): 32.4K clicks
  • December 2024 (2nd month post-migration): 41.3K clicks
  • January 2025 (3rd month post-migration): 40.4K clicks
macnest.com domain on October 24, 2024 (Thursday). Source: Google Search Console
techtoro.io domain on November 28, 2024 (Thursday). Source: Google Search Console

Considering the seasonal drop in demand for MacBook spare parts during the holiday season and three Google updates in November – December 2024, the recovery speed was above expectations.
