By the time a US shopper types "auto parts" into Google, the purchase decision is almost made: 87.6% of that demand is about where to buy, not what to buy. That is the central finding of Promodo's original analysis of 20,000 US search queries containing "auto parts" or "car parts". The data is ours: we pulled it, cleaned it, de-duplicated it and classified every query by intent, funnel stage, brand, location and part category. These figures have not been published anywhere else.
‍

Auto Parts Search: Key Findings at a Glance

  • 30.1M average monthly searches after removing duplicate keyword variants. The raw keyword list adds up to 106.8M, so standard keyword tools overstate this market about 3.5 times.
  • 87.6% of demand sits at the decision stage. Only 10.9% is about finding the right part and 0.2% is problem research.
  • Half of all demand (49.0%) is a retailer name typed straight into Google. National chains own 68.2% of the search volume.
  • 27.8% of demand is local: "near me", a city, a street or store hours. That is 8.4M searches a month.
  • Two in three "near me" searches name no brand. 2.35M monthly unbranded "near me" searches are open to any store that shows up.
  • 8.0% of demand names a local, independent business, spread across 2,500 queries. Independents have a real search footprint.
  • Demand dips in February (index 0.86) and runs 4–6% above average from March to August.

Auto Parts Search Trends: Main Insights

1. Shoppers Search for a Store, Not a Part

We sorted every query into one primary intent. Navigational and local searches dominate; commercial research is a thin slice.
‍

Search intentAvg. monthly searchesShareWhat the shopper wants
Navigational: national retailer name14.73M49.0%A specific chain they already chose
Local: near me, city, address, hours8.36M27.8%A physical store, now
Navigational: independent business2.40M8.0%A named local shop
Commercial: category, product, price, used, fitment4.08M13.6%Options, deals, the right part
Service and account: jobs, login, returns, tool rental0.39M1.3%An existing relationship
Informational: questions, policies, symptoms0.09M0.3%An answer

‍

What this means for a store owner: the "auto parts" keyword universe is a store-choice battlefield. Shoppers arrive with a problem already diagnosed and a part already in mind. The fight is over who they trust to have it in stock, nearby, today.
‍

2. National Chains Own the Brand Layer

Branded searches for national retailers account for 68.2% of demand (20.5M a month). Generic searches with no brand make up 21.0% (6.3M). Searches naming an independent or regional business add 9.8%, and OEM or parts brands add 1.0%.
‍

Among retailers, Advance Auto Parts leads with 7.0M monthly searches (23.4%), followed by O'Reilly Auto Parts at 5.7M (19.1%), AutoZone at 4.2M (14.0%) and NAPA at 2.2M (7.3%). RockAuto is the largest online-first player at 357K (1.2%). Read more about the competitive landscape in our auto parts market research.

Read these shares with one caveat. Every query in this data set contains "auto parts" or "car parts", so brands with those words in their name are over-represented. AutoZone, RockAuto and Pep Boys appear only when shoppers add "auto parts" to the name. Their true search share is larger than shown here.
‍

3. Local Auto Parts Searches: 8.4M With a Store in Mind

Local searches are the second-largest block and the most actionable for physical stores.

  • "Near me" searches: 3.61M a month (12.0%). Of these, 2.35M are generic ("auto parts near me", "auto parts store near me") and only 1.26M name a chain. The single largest local query, "parts auto near me", draws 1.22M searches a month.
  • City, state and street searches: 4.64M a month (15.4%) across 6,412 distinct queries, such as "advance auto parts chiefland fl". This is a very long tail: thousands of small, specific searches tied to a location.
  • Store hours and contact details: 146K a month. "Open now", phone numbers and directions.
  • Used and salvage parts with local intent: 318K a month ("used auto parts near me", "junkyard auto parts near me").

The takeaway for independents: the 2.35M unbranded "near me" searches are decided by Google Business Profile quality, reviews, proximity and stock signals, not by brand awareness. A well-run local store can win them against a national chain.
‍

4. Independent Stores Have a Real Search Footprint

Shoppers searched for named local and regional businesses 2.4M times a month, across 2,502 different queries. Most of them are small: a few hundred searches each. Together they equal a top-four national chain.

These searches are loyal by definition. Someone searching for a specific family-owned parts store already knows it. The risk is losing that shopper on the results page: to a missing website, an outdated phone number, wrong hours or a competitor's ad placed on your name.
‍

5. Price, Coupons and Online Buying of Auto Parts

Transactional modifiers are a small share of the total but signal shoppers ready to buy.
‍

ModifierAvg. monthly searches

catalog44K

Coupon, promo, and discount-code searches together reach about 365K a month, almost all of them attached to a chain name ("napa auto parts coupon", "advance auto parts promo code"). Shoppers expect a deal and look for it before they check out.

6. Used and Salvage Parts: A Distinct Audience

Used, salvage, and junkyard searches add up to 836K a month when flagged across all intents. These shoppers are price-driven and often local ("salvage yard auto parts near me", "u pull it auto parts"). Demand peaks in September (index 1.23) and October (1.16).
‍

7. Seasonality: Batteries in Winter, Brakes in Fall and Spring

  • Car battery demand peaks in January (11.7M, index 1.30) and bottoms out in June (6.7M, 0.75). Lifespan questions spike in January (1.38) and rise again in August (1.10), when summer heat takes its toll.
  • Key fob batteries peak in October (1.37), ahead of the battery season.
  • Brake pads peak in September (6.6M, 1.25) and March (1.22), and dip in July (0.84). Searches for brake replacement cost jump to 1.42 in March.
  • Squeaking brakes peak in October (1.22) and are lowest in February (0.81). The symptom precedes the fall brake-pad season.
    ‍

What Auto Parts Retailers Should Do With This

  1. Be present before the shopper knows what to buy. Publish answers to symptom questions: why a car won't start, why brakes squeak, how long a battery lasts. Link each answer to the parts, tools and services that solve it. A content marketing plan built on symptom data makes this systematic.
  2. Build fitment pages at scale. Year, make and model pages for batteries and brake pads serve thousands of small searches that national chains under-serve. This is the core of automotive SEO for large catalogs.
  3. Publish real prices for the job. Answer the 2.2M monthly brake cost searches with transparent DIY kits and installation prices, and test how those pages convert with CRO.
  4. Lead with services. Free battery testing, charging, installation and recycling bring people into the store. Put them in your ads, on your local pages and in your AI-readable data with GEO.
  5. Sell the basket. Testers, chargers, jumper cables, rotors, shims and lubricant draw about 900K monthly searches between the two parts. Bundle them on product pages and in automotive PPC shopping campaigns.
  6. Follow up after the sale. Customers who search "new brake pads squeak" need reassurance and a bedding-in guide, not silence. Batteries and brake pads are repeat purchases on a multi-year cycle, which makes them ideal for email marketing automation.
  7. Time budgets to the season. Push battery campaigns from October to January and brake campaigns in March and September to October. Performance forecasting helps plan spend before each peak.

How Promodo Turns Search Demand Into Parts Sales

  • Automotive SEO. We build vehicle fitment pages, symptom-to-solution content and category architecture that captures the long tail national chains leave open. See how this approach recovered and grew Autodoc's organic traffic by 47%.
  • GEO (Generative Engine Optimization). Questions like "why won't my car start" are now answered by AI. We structure your content, product data and expertise so AI assistants cite your store and recommend your parts.
  • Automotive PPC. We separate high-value service and local intent from cheap research traffic, shift budgets with battery and brake seasons, and run Shopping and Performance Max with fitment-level product feeds. See how we automated paid ads for EXIST's 1M+ product catalog.
  • Retention marketing. We build vehicle-based CRM and email programs: battery check reminders before winter, brake inspection prompts in spring and fall, post-purchase guides and loyalty offers.
  • Analytics. We map the full journey, from the first symptom search to the in-store or online sale, so you know which content and campaigns actually drive revenue.

Frequently Asked Questions

[[FAQ-START]]

What percentage of auto parts searches are local?

About 27.8% of US "auto parts" searches are local, or 8.4M searches a month, according to Promodo's 2026 research. That includes 3.61M "near me" searches, 4.64M searches naming a city, state or street, and 146K searches for store hours and contact details. Two in three "near me" searches name no retailer, so they are open to any store with a strong local presence.

Which auto parts retailer is searched most in the US?

Advance Auto Parts is the most-searched auto parts retailer in Promodo's data, with 7.0M searches a month (23.4% of demand). It is followed by O'Reilly Auto Parts (5.7M), AutoZone (4.2M) and NAPA (2.2M). Because the data set covers queries containing "auto parts", retailers with those words in their name are over-represented, and AutoZone's true search share is likely higher.

When is auto parts search demand highest?

Overall auto parts search demand runs 4–6% above average from March to August and drops to its lowest point in February, 14% below average. Individual parts follow their own seasons: car battery searches peak in December and January, and brake pad searches peak in September and March.

How can independent auto parts stores compete with national chains in search?

Independent stores compete best in local search, where 2.35M unbranded "near me" searches a month are decided by proximity, reviews and stock information rather than brand. A complete Google Business Profile, a page for each location, steady reviews, local inventory ads and clear service information (battery testing, installation, tool rental) help a local store win these searches. Independents should also protect their own name: shoppers search for named local businesses 2.4M times a month.
